The heart is an empty stomach,

beating away hunger pains.

The body is dissembled —

High price of capital punishment.

The cost of stolen crumbs.

Blood filling the gutters;

Wine to rats.

Brain can still feel what fingers touch

though they are miles

miles away.

One eye faces down

One crunched by the teeth of a dog —

just stealing his own keep.

Pinches in separation.

Now that it’s apart,

Sewn together.

In being torn,

one experiences the guttural togetherness

of lying on cobbled streets

instead of walking on top of them.
